V2.0.0 Alpha GUI!

Ever needed to compress an image down to a reasonable size for use on a web server? or to send over a slow link? We have tried multiple image compression apps and this one easily takes the top prize. Matteo @ SaeraSoft has been working hard on this application in his spare time and I believe is onto something good here. I’ll try sum up the features quickly for you here:

  1. Batch Compress – compress multiple files and folders easily
  2. Set Quality levels – You determine the compression you want.
  3. Preview Images – Self explanatory
  4. Online App – If you don’t want to use the app, you can always log on and use the web version.

Matteo is currently working on a V2 (Alpha) version of the software which is again leaps and bounds improved on the original version. You can check out V2 on his github page! If you have a spare few $$ to donate to his cause, I’m sure he would be much appreciative! Donate here.

vultr.com – Cloud Computing https://dirtyoptics.com/vultr-com-cloud-computing/ https://dirtyoptics.com/vultr-com-cloud-computing/#respond Mon, 31 Aug 2020 03:16:20 +0000 https://dirtyoptics.com/?p=54768 I generally only post offline software tools that have helped me in the past, however, I can’t really go past this online cloud service. Now I know what your thinking, there are heaps of these services! and yes, there are. However, I wanted to highlight VULTR because of the access to servers in Sydney Australia and the ease of use. The location of servers was important for me as I didn’t really want my VPN service routing around the globe. So for me, server locations are a BIG deal. Sure, if Digital Ocean had servers in Perth or Sydney then I’d probably be reviewing them also.

Ok, so what do I use VULTR for? Well, this web page for starters. VULTR is a cloud computing service that allows you to run up virtual servers that can be tailored to your liking. You can choose from many settings:

  • Server Locations
  • Server Types (OS, ISO, Pre Configured, One-Click)
  • Server Sizes (Cores, Ram, Bandwidth)
  • and much more…

I use VULTR for all kinds of development tasks, it is much easier to use the simple interface they provide to get a server up and running, then to run it locally! I get my own unique IP address and voila, off I go. The one-click create, install, and destroy is super helpful and whenever I stuff something up I can either go back to a snapshot or re-install and start over. No messing around with SD cards in Raspberry Pi’s, no messing with hardware.

If you want to run a VPN instance, within a couple of clicks you can. If your desire is to run a Ubuntu Server on the version of your choice in minutes! Its that’s easy. If I can do it then so can you.

For a limited time, VULTR is offering $100 worth of server time for free…

(This may expire soon! Get in quick.)

TFTP32 – DHCP, TFTP, DNS, SNTP all in one Server https://dirtyoptics.com/tftp32-dhcp-tftp-dns-sntp-all-in-one-server/ https://dirtyoptics.com/tftp32-dhcp-tftp-dns-sntp-all-in-one-server/#respond Tue, 02 Jun 2020 11:52:54 +0000 https://dirtyoptics.com/?p=54697 An honorable mention goes out to TFTP32! Today I had the task of setting up some IP cameras that by default required a DHCP server to get an IP address. Funnily enough, I did not have a router insight and needed a DHCP server running on my laptop to get them set up. TFTP32 was easy to configure, set, and run. It is a low drag application that does exactly as it says. It’s not fancy, but it works.

Tftpd64 is a free, opensource IPv6 ready application which includes DHCP, TFTP, DNS, SNTP and Syslog servers as well as a TFTP client.
The TFTP client and server are fully compatible with TFTP option support (tsize, blocksize and timeout), which allow the maximum performance when transferring the data.
Some extended features such as directory facility, security tuning, interface filtering; progress bars and early acknowledgments enhance usefulness and throughput of the TFTP protocol for both client and server.
The included DHCP server provides unlimited automatic or static IP address assignment.

This is the kind of application you need in a pinch. Download it, add it to your app bag.

Rufus – Create bootable USB drives the easy way https://dirtyoptics.com/rufus-create-bootable-usb-drives-the-easy-way/ https://dirtyoptics.com/rufus-create-bootable-usb-drives-the-easy-way/#respond Sun, 31 May 2020 01:58:16 +0000 https://dirtyoptics.com/?p=54691 I create bootable USB drives for all kinds of things, recovery, fresh installs, and development to name a few. I always find myself back using Rufus to get the job done super quick and easy. I use this tool on a frequent basis.

Rufus is a utility that helps format and create bootable USB flash drives, such as USB keys/pendrives, memory sticks, etc.
It can be especially useful for cases where:

  • you need to create USB installation media from bootable ISOs (Windows, Linux, UEFI, etc.)
  • you need to work on a system that doesn’t have an OS installed
  • you need to flash a BIOS or other firmware from DOS
  • you want to run a low-level utility

Despite its small size, Rufus provides everything you need!

Rufus prides itself on being the fastest of all the boot drive creation tools. You can see in the stats that it does make very short work on installing ISO’s to the drive and setting up the boot sectors. Give it a try, you won’t be disappointed.

From Windows 10 to a Raspberry Pi for example? This is the solution for you if you do not have a full understanding of Linux and network shares. Use WinSCP to easily copy files to your Linux environment in a few clicks. WinSCP can functions just like any other FTP/SFTP client however it has a few other features baked in which can really help you transfer files between Windows and Linux. I had to use this piece of software before learning all the intricacies of Linux…Saying that I still need this piece of software every day.

WinSCP is able to handle multiple protocols. More than most clients. You can check out the protocol comparison here.

  • SFTP (SSH File Transfer Protocol);
  • FTP (File Transfer Protocol);
  • SCP (Secure Copy Protocol);
  • WebDAV (Web Distributed Authoring and Versioning);
  • S3 (Amazon S3).

We use it to find the IP address of all kinds of devices we plug in to the network. Sometimes a devices comes pre-configured and we don’t have its information, or DHCP is enabled and again we are not sure what IP it has been given. Angry IP scanner comes in handy to find out these particular details and often helps in fault finding on the network.
